• Fencing – Most owners use electric wire or mesh field fencing. Materials can run $2-4 per foot installed. Perimeter fencing is essential, and you may need interior divisions.
• Shelter – A basic 8×8 ft shelter costs $500-1,000+ in materials. Provide a minimum of 10 sq ft per pig. Shelters must be draft-free with good ventilation.
• Feeders – Durable metal self-feeders’ cost $100-300. Provide feeding space of 1foot per 2-3 pigs. Or you can opt for rubber bowls and/or a stall mat which are signifincantly less expensive. We use stall mats as you may have seen in some of our other photos throughout our website.
• Water System – Pigs need constant water access. Plumbed automatic waterers can run $150-300 however aren’t required.
• Handling Equipment – Most breeders don’t intend on trimming their own pigs hooves and tusks however should you choose to go down that path expect to invest about $300 in equipment to get the job done. Fortunately because KuneKune’s are a much more docile breed there are strategies to keep their hooves trimmed without the use of a chute or any major infrastructure.
• Bedding – For shelter flooring. Straw or wood shavings average $10/bale and $6/bag respectively.
• Cleaning Supplies – Disinfectants, brushes, shovels, wheelbarrow, etc. Budget whatever you feel comfortable here. We generally use bleach in all of our barns and give them a day or two before our pigs return to air out.

• We have developed a custom mix non-GMO feed designed specifically for KuneKunes by our owner Kristen Kastle. While average pig feed costs $0.33/lb, our feed is $0.60/lb due to the premium ingredients. This significantly increases our production costs but we prefer the quality ingredients to ensure the health and safety of our herd.
• We price our barrows (castrated males) at $350 to offer an affordable pet pig option.
