Diet and Health in KuneKune Pigs

Diet and health in KuneKune pigs are deeply interconnected. Diet plays a vital role in the health of any living creature, and our adorable KuneKune pigs are no exception. Understanding their dietary needs is essential to raising a happy, healthy pig. KuneKune Pigs Diet and Nutrition provides detailed insights on this aspect.

In contrast to many other pig breeds, KuneKune pigs thrive on a diet mainly composed of grass. A well-maintained pasture can supply the majority of their nutritional needs, reducing the need for supplementary feeding. However, if grass availability is limited, a balanced commercial pig feed can provide a nutritious alternative. Everyone’s situation is different and I cannot stress that enough. We grain our entire herd from the months of November through March regardless. Outside of that, we encourage grazing as much as possible outside of sows that have recently farrowed and new piglets that have freshly weaned.

KuneKune pigs are generally robust, but as with all animals, health issues can arise. Regular vet check-ups, a balanced diet, and plenty of exercise can do wonders for pig health.

In terms of breed-specific health issues, obesity is a concern for KuneKune pigs, owing to their small size and relatively low activity levels. An excessive size and weight can lead to numerous health problems, including heart disease and joint issues, underlining the importance of a balanced diet and regular exercise.

Feeding Your KuneKune Pig

Feeding your KuneKune pig is not just about what they eat, but also about how and when they eat. Check our KuneKune Pig Feeding Guide for helpful tips.

The mill that we work with does provide a Non-GMO grain that is custom built for our KuneKune’s and we have the freedom to adjust the ingredient list at any point. I strongly encourage any reader to reach out to local mills and although you may not be purchasing by the ton, they usually have 50 lb barrels they can sell.

We avoid commercial grain at all costs, simply because we want to support local and small business owners. I want to be able to have a conversation with the mill that’s making our feed. When you purchase from the larger commercial operations it is not unheard of for them to be constantly changing the recipes.

When values of soybean/corn etc. change, so do their formulas so they can cut cost.

My only qualm with for my KuneKune’s is I want to make sure what they are getting is consistent. If they are getting sick for any reason, I want to feel confident that I know exactly what they are getting in their grain.

It’s also crucial to be aware of the foods that KuneKune pigs cannot eat. Our What Can KuneKune Pigs Not Eat page can serve as a useful guide in this regard.

Seasonal Care

Fall/Winter

Just like us humans, diet and health in KuneKune Pigs change with the seasons. Adapting their care accordingly can greatly contribute to their wellbeing.

Throughout the cold winter months it’s critical that our pigs receive grain. Not only this but we also include a grass hay supplement as well as flake of alfalfa hay soaked and mixed into their grain. If we are out of Alfalfa specifically we will opt for Chaffhaye.

Being that it gets colder over the winter months it should be no surprise that our furry little friends are expending more energy trying to keep themselves warm. Although we have access to heat lamps to keep them warm we try to avoid any use of them unless absolutely necessary.

Typical heat lamps produce anywhere between 150-170 degrees (or more) a few inches away from the bulb itself. Something that we have learned over the years was the factor of pneumonia. If its 10 degrees outside at night and 30 during the day a temperature swing of 20-30 degrees is not that big of a deal for any livestock or animals to handle. However if you throw a heat lamp into the equation you are taking on a large risk for upper respiratory issues.

Spring/Summer

After a long Winter our animals can’t wait to get out of their pens and barns. As discussed earlier we generally start rationing off grain over the course of the month of March. Primarily because we have a history of heavy rainfall in late February and early March which provides ample growth.

Life Cycle of KuneKune Pigs

Understanding the life cycle of KuneKune pigs is integral to their care and health maintenance. Each stage of their life, from piglets to adults, requires specific care and attention.

At different stages of life they require not only a different diet but also different maintenance protocols. Such as worming schedules, hoof trimmings and tusk removal.

Seasonal Care for KuneKune Pigs

Seasonal variations can significantly impact the diet and health in KuneKune pigs, requiring changes in their care and diet. For example, during winter, they might require more fat in their diet to generate body heat, while in the summer, a diet lower in fat and high in hydration might be more suitable. Additionally, seasonal care might involve making changes to their living environment, providing proper shelter during colder months, and shade during hotter months.

Diseases and Prevention in KuneKune Pigs

KuneKune pigs are generally robust, but like any animal, they can fall prey to various diseases. Regular health check-ups, vaccinations, and maintaining cleanliness in their environment can go a long way in preventing illnesses.
